What is ‘Shared Reality’ and what does it mean for the future of viewing live sporting events?

In 2024, technological advancements are revealed so frequently that they almost seem routine, even for tech enthusiasts like yours truly. However, occasionally, a groundbreaking innovation appears that blows our mind and suddenly redefines our understanding of what’s achievable.

This very scenario happened to me last weekend as I scrolled through my Twitter X feed while watching college football. The Michigan Wolverines were taking on the Texas Longhorns, when all the sudden, I came across this post:

Mind blown.

It didn’t take long for Cosm, the company behind the technology, to go viral and leave millions of sports fans in awe. But what is Cosm, and does it have the potential to change how we view sports forever? Let’s dig in.

Who is Cosm and what do they do?

Cosm is a global technology company, is best known for building the largest and most prestigous planetariums and science scenters worldwide. Their mission is to create a “shared reality” around live programming.

Where are the Cosm venues located?

Currently, there are two venues in the US (Los Angeles and Dallas). The L.A. location, which is part of the Hollywood Park mixed-use development that includes SoFi Stadium and the Intuit Dome and the Dallas location is at Grandscape in The Colony.

What is “Shared Reality?”

According to the Cosm website, “Shared Reality gives you the immersive experience of augmented or virtual reality but on a much more immense scale.”

Does Shared Reality require a headset?

Shared Reality does not require a headset, making this technology even more impressive.

What is the viewing experience like?

The 87-foot-by-55-foot diameter dome that offers a hyper-realistic and up-close viewing experience and varying views depending on what is happening in real time. For example, during a kickoff return, attendees view the action as if they are standing in the endzone just feet away, thanks to a camera located on the goalpost. Check it out for yourself.

How much do tickets cost?

The cost depends on the event, but we’ve found tickets as low as $28 and as high as $759. In other words, you pay for the experience you’re given.

How do I purchase tickets?

To purchase tickets at the Dallas venue, click here.

To purchase tickets at the Los Angeles venue, click here.

Are there different seating options?

Yes, there are three different types of seating options.

The Dome

The most expensive (but most awesome) experience. When you’re in The Dome, you’re completely immersed. The technology makes you feel like you’re courtside at an NBA game or on the sidelines at a college football game.

The Hall

Includes wall-to-wall LED displays.

The Deck

A large outdoor terrace on the top level.
